Why Yo-Yo Dieting Is Bad for You

ByAndrew M. Carter

Yo-yo dieting gets this term because it consists of bouts when the dieter is losing weight quickly, but eventually the weight will come back on their body. This diet uses the deprivation of food to lose weight, as opposed to proper diet and exercise routines. The reason this diet is unsuccessful is because when you stop eating, your body has no source with which to get its energy from. That is when the body uses fat and muscles for energy. Once you begin eating again, the weight will just come right back on, which is why this diet is coined the term. This can actually do more bad than good from a weight standpoint, because when you do not eat, your metabolism will slow down. Once you do begin to eat again, the body will gain the weight back plus more because the body cannot metabolize the food as quickly as it did before.

Generally, the weight gained back from the eating is fat. You will lose fat and muscle when you do not eat, but when you start eating again, fat will be the only thing deposited on the body. Muscles require resistance training and a source of protein in order to grow. Since none of that is involved in this diet, you are making your body weaker and increasing your body fat percentage, which can cause a lot of problems in the present and the future. With a higher body fat composition, you are more at risk for diseases such as heart disease and diabetes. Also, you will be more likely to suffer from hypertension, or high blood pressure. Those who participate in yo-yo dieting have also reported signs of depression, which can cause a lot of emotional problems as well.

People involved in these programs become depressed because their restrictive dieting technique is not helping them lose weight once the return to their normal eating habits. This can make them eat more poorly in the future since a lot of people find comfort in food when they are depressed. This diet ironically seems to have an effect on the participants that is the absolute opposite of their goals. People begin the diet to lose weight, but in the end they have a higher body fat percentage, lower metabolism, more health problems and possibly a higher weight. Being healthy is a goal for a lot of people, but using this technique to lose weight will get you going in the wrong direction.
