Let's face it: unless you have a real medical condition (and only a very small minority of us actually do), all diets work. If that's the case, then we would all be slim! But most of us whose brains sabotage our weight loss efforts have battled with weight issues for long periods of time, and this is because we have not addressed the reason we are overweight in the first place - and STAY overweight.
A thin person is just wired differently. A thin person eats to survive; the way it should be. The naturally thin person's brain is wired to give messages when they have eaten enough. A fat person's brain misses the boat and does not give those signals of fullness. An overweight person survives to eat, just as an alcoholic lives to drink, or a drug addict lives for the next fix, or a gambler lives for the next gamble. When we are addicted to food, or overeat, there is something desperately wrong in our lives that needs to be dealt with. The weight is merely a symptom of what's going on inside the brain. Once you figure out what the weight is a symptom of, you will be well on your way to losing weight and getting thin for good.
It could be as simple as acknowledging that you are overweight because you don't make time to prepare your food for the day, so you opt for junk foods that you can grab on your way to a client, or it could be as complex as finally understanding that you felt rejected as a child and turned to food for comfort, or even that you started eating more to keep yourself unattractive to the opposite sex because you have been hurt and don't want to get into another relationship.
When a friend of mine was 4 years old, her alcoholic father would tell her mother that he was taking her with to visit with his mother. Instead, he would leave her in the car for hours while he went drinking at the pub. To pacify her, he would occasionally bring her a packet of crisps and a soft drink. Later on in life, in times when she needed comfort, she would turn to crisps and soft drinks. It was only after she dealt with her feelings of rejection as a four year old that she started to heal and lose weight for good. Today she runs a natural, organic foods company and has conquered her emotional pain.
Like my friend, try to let yourself feel any pain or sorrow that you have stuffed away with food - because this is the first step to taking back your life and living - and eating to survive.
