Almost every move you make is either stabilized by or transferred through your torso which is comprised of our abdominals and lower back. Your torso is your body's center of gravity and center of power. Collectively the muscles that comprise your torso are called the Core. It cannot be overstated that the importance of developing and maintaining your center of power, your core, is paramount as it is the base for building all of your muscle groups as you work to get lean, sexy and fit. There are many benefits to having a strong core:
1. Provides internal pressure to support the spine
2. Helps protect vital organs
3. Decreases the risk of injury due to poor body alignment
4. Greatly improves coordination and balance
5. Improves power output and accuracy of movements
Even though this article focuses on strengthening your core, it is important to know that sculpting your core is just the beginning to defining a whole new body-you. A strong core is critical to achieving overall health and fitness and is the base upon which you build a total body powerhouse. For those of us who want the washboard abs, crunches are not enough. You must also lower your body fat and this is done with intense cardio, proper nutrition and rest. It is the sum of the total of the entire process that will give you the chiseled set of sexy, slim abs and youthful appearance you desire.
Using Your Cardiovascular System to Sculpt Your Core:
The cardiovascular system is fundamental in carrying nutrients to your body and displacing the waste your body creates, on a molecular level. The lungs intake the air that oxygenate the blood and when your heart beats it pumps the oxygen rich blood through your veins. This blood carries nutrients throughout the body. When the body depletes the blood of oxygen it replaces it with molecular wastes. These wastes are filtered through the kidneys and leave the body as urine or sweat. Often people think that bowel movements are the body's way of ridding itself of 'wastes.' In actuality what leaves the body in bowel movements is what the body hasn't used or doesn't need, from the food it ingests. It is easy to see how all of these systems tie in together. It is also important to understand how the blood is the molecular nutrient system of the body so that you will concentrate on building up a strong blood 'delivery' system within your body by working out your cardiovascular system. As you exercise your cardiovascular system you increase the rate of this 'metabolism' in your body. Your heart works harder, your lungs work harder and your cardiovascular system gets STRONGER. You get healthier because you metabolize faster, which in turn burns that layer of fat that is hiding your abs you are working so hard to sculpt!
